“Sticks and Stones”
Opening Reception: May 18, 2012 at 7pm
Gallery M Squared is pleased to announce the opening of Sticks and Stones, a paired exhibition of new original paintings by Nicky Davis and Jessica Rice, two artists from the Houston area.
As the title suggests, the pieces on display in Sticks and Stones are frequently playful and coy, while also revealing mischievous intent. Themes of cultural alienation with the natural world and satirical humor unite both artists’ collections, with Nicky’s bright palette and demure, knowing animals and characters the perfect foil to Jessica’s eerie visions of surreal melancholia and tragicomic creatures.
Jessica Rice has been an artist for most of her life, though she only recently came to painting, exhibiting her work for the first time two years ago. Inspired by Pop Surrealist painters of the last two decades, Jessica’s paintings are strange narrations, each telling a tale set in a bizarre dreamscape. Fauna-spewing giants and other comically unlucky characters abound, schadenfreude commingling heavily with the sympathy her creations inspire in the observer. A disarming lack of cynicism, however, grounds the work and tells of an honest, decidedly peculiar, perspective.
Nicky Davis has been a prominent member of the Houston art scene for more than a decade. A painter since high school, his early work drew on the Lowbrow movement of the 1970s and the Neo-expressionist painters of the 1980s. Though his current illustrative style and vibrant color choices occasionally hint at a cautious optimism, the absurdities of mainstream consumer culture and the damage done by man’s ecological irresponsibility still drive his work. Amongst the bright Indian headdresses and grinning yetis are subtle suggestions that all is most definitely not well.
Gallery M Squared is located in the Houston Heights and is dedicated to collecting, preserving, researching and exhibiting fine and decorative art. Representing artists of all generations, the gallery handles work in all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, drawing and printmaking.
